Context Indi Music Press Journalist Profile
Kerry Tod
Having been a fan of music from a very young age, I grew up on the likes of The Clash, The Jam, Joy Division, The Cure and other great British bands, many starting from humble beginnings and signing to little known or even unknown labels which grew to be known as Independent music. While Indi music became a genre in itself in the mid 1990's with the likes of Blur, Oasis, Elastica and Pulp bearing little resemblance to the size of the label the band was signed to. My love of new, up and coming and cutting edge music has never abated.
As a lover of all great British music my personal tastes took me to the great British hip hop and urban acts that emerged after 2000 to counter the dominance of UK Bling Hop, a scene that seemed so far from its original routes, so un-relatable to most British music lovers. It was during this time that with Richard Lock I set up the UK's first fully digital magazine in 2002 Context. Covering UK Urban music, art and fashion we set about creating a CD_ROM magazine, filled with video interviews, interactive reviews, which allowed the reader to hear clips of the reviewed albums/singles and followed the festival scene with video diary's and full exposés and written articles on urban music related topics.
As co-editor and chief of editorial content I was the principle journalist for the news and features, wrote the features and conducted the interviews section, I was also heavily involved with the design, promotion and distribution of the free to use (advertising paid for) magazine in CD-ROM. This gave me a great insight into the workings of the UK underground scene and many of those interviewed in the early days went on to be household stars. But at the time reporting from dingy studios, homemade set ups and pay by hour recording studios we got exclusives with the likes of Dizzy Rascle, Skinny Man and Estelle. Now major players in the British Urban Scene.
Now as a freelance journalist covering any story of interest I like to retain my roots in what was then and is now my passion, Music. Sick of the tabloidisation of musicians and bands Context Indi Press was set up as a subsidiary arm of the PIWS with the aim of covering cutting edge, up and coming, new talent and just plain old good British music from whatever Genre. Avoiding the tabloid clichés of excesses, choice in partners and anything coming from Simon Cowell and Co, Context aims to provide accurate and informative reviews and articles for the mainstream and Independent Music Press
