The Centre also has two squash courts and a large floodlit and modern 3G pitch.
Plas Arthur is one of four centres across the island run by Môn Actif, which actively promotes its leisure facilities for people of all ages and abilities.
“As holders of the Silver insport Standard, Plas Arthur Leisure Centre is firmly committed to Disability Sport Wales’ mission of transforming lives through the power of sport.”
Sasha Williams, Môn Actif’s Disability Sport Wales Development Officer
The Challenge
It is a well known fact that people with a long-standing illness, disability or infirmity are less likely to participate in sport. Plas Arthur Leisure Centre has a range of health, fitness and sport sessions which are inclusive for people with accessibility issues, and its team of fitness experts are only too happy to help and advise visitors so they gain maximum benefit from their time and experience at the centre.
Supporting the Solution
As well as offering fully inclusive sessions, Plas Arthur has additional dedicated sessions for people with accessibility issues within the usual timetable. This includes insport Swim sessions which are free inclusive swimming sessions every Saturday from 3-4pm; insport Football is held every Monday 5pm-6pm and is based around fun and development for male and female members of all abilities; and Môn Independents Multi Sport is held every Wednesday 7pm-8pm. The recent investment in the new equipment in the fitness room has helped to support an improvement in customer health and wellbeing, and has provided inclusive opportunities for all as the equipment is now adaptable for use by customers of all abilities and needs. When combined with the range of its other sessions, Plas Arthur is offering plenty of choices for when and how often people want to play sport with the goal of getting more people more active, more often.
The Benefits
Sport and physical activities are crucial to everyone’s health and wellbeing and offer many advantages from building muscle, improving balance and co-ordination, as well as having a profound and positive impact on mental wellbeing. Plas Arthur is bringing these benefits to people with accessibility issues while inspiring them to become fitter, healthier and happier, and helping them achieve their long-term potential.
Purple Offer
Plas Arthur has a Disability Membership card available at a concessionary price of £8 compared to £21, which also allows one carer to participate free of charge in any activity with a disabled person.
Sunflower Scheme
The Sunflower is a recognised sign that the wearer has a hidden disability. It’s discreet but easy for others to identify, acknowledge and understand that the wearer faces challenges, whether that be the need for additional support, help or a little more time. Through PIWS, Plas Arthur Leisure Centre has registered to join the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Scheme. Their membership has seen Plas Arthur be added to the scheme’s location map on its website and they have committed to train their staff to identify the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower which ensures they have a deeper understanding of hidden disabilities and learn how to approach and support customers who are wearing a Hidden Sunflower.
