Big Pit National Coal Museum is an industrial heritage museum in Blaenavon, Torfaen, Wales. Who have tried to adapt the mine as much as possible to allow everyone a chance to visit.
There are some accessibility issue however the museum has done its best to ensure that every one is able to enjoy the former coal mine.
There is baby changing facilities in the toilets located at the Pit Head Baths.
Wheelchair & limited mobility visitors are welcome and will be able to explore many aspects of the museum however some assistance may be necessary and the use of electric wheelchairs underground is not allowed (they offer some manual wheelchairs if needed). Only 4 wheelchair users are allowed underground at any one time.
Some exhibits are in a glass cage. However staff will assist any one with a visual impairment to handle some of the exhibits. It is a sensory experience visiting the mine as there is plenty to hear, touch and smell.
During the walk through simulation guided by audio visual presentation there are loud noises, flashing lights & differing light levels and colours through out which may be alarming to some visitors.
Over all whilst some challenges still remain its a great way to try a new adventure. Big Pit have really tried to ensure that the museum is accessible to everyone.
